Greengauges frequently asked questions
How do I design my gauges? The greengauges site is unique, it allows you to choose a personal , customised look for your gauges, by giving you a choice of bezel styles, dial background colours, dial print colours and pointer colours, with literally hundreds of different permutations of styling for any given gauge. Better than that, you can see your design come to life in real time on your computer screen. At any point in the process you can change any of the variables and instantly see the effect that the change has on your design. You can make as many changes as you like up to the point of ordering.
When you begin the design process, you will be presented with a large image of a Speedometer and Tachometer, and a series of smaller images of the other gauges available from the greengauges range. You use these images to assess the effect of your changing design on the appearance of your gauges. You can buy as many or as few gauges as you wish, by checking or leaving blank the boxes next to the gauges.
How does my design get manufactured?
Your order is transmitted electronically to our manufacturing plant near Swansea in the U.K. On receipt of that order a dedicated manufacturing cell swings into action and makes your gauges especially for you, to your design. In order to achieve this high level of customisation, coupled with rapid turn round, we use world’s best practice manufacturing methodologies. Your gauges are factory fresh, with a one year warranty.
Who are greengauges.com?
Greengauges is a new trading style created for this exciting new service, but your order will be filled by Speedy Cables Ltd who are a long established company in the automotive industry and have been in business for over 50 years. They specialise in refurbishment of gauges and in producing bespoke custom gauges. They are also specialist control cable manufacturers.
Doesn’t this level of customisation come expensive?
Not at all, greengauges are more expensive to make, of course, but on the other hand we also cut out the middleman, so that we can offer you a highly personalised, customised product at very competitive prices.
What happens if I run into trouble during installation of my gauges?
Firstly, we should say that we’ve tried to avoid trouble for you by:-
- having clearly written instructions ( copied here on the web site - just click on help/faq)
- having a comprehensive range of matching senders
However, if you do get into trouble, then help is only an e-mail away at help@greengauges.com
My car already has senders fitted, do I need to buy new to go with my gauges?
The answer here is “it just depends” Around the world there are 3 or 4 different electrical standards for gauges and senders. The standards are normally expressed in terms of their ohmic values at the low and high end of the scale shown on the gauge. So a typical European standard would be 180 ohms at empty and 10 ohms at full for a fuel gauge/sender combination, in North America you may find gauges that are 33 ohms at empty and 240 ohms at full. Greengauges follow the European Standard, so if you have compatible senders, then that’s fine, if you don’t then you’ll need to buy matching senders from us, and although we’ve used a fuel gauge as an example, the same is true for all electrical temperature and pressure gauges as well.
What’s the best way to pick up a speed signal for my electronic speedometer?
There are several ways of picking up a speed signal, but some are definitely better than others, our recommendation, in order of preference, would be:-
- If your engine is of recent manufacture with electronic management then you can collect a very clean, precise signal from the electronic control unit of the engine management system, and you also avoid the need to buy and fit a sensor.
- If your engine was originally fitted with a speedometer, then you will have a mechanical take-off for the speedometer cable. Here you could fit a hall effect device, which uses the mechanical takeoff to generate an electronic signal, or you can use a magnetic sensor kit as described below.
- If your engine came with neither a speedometer cable take-off, nor an electronic engine management system, then you will have to use a magnetic sensor, to count the revolutions of the prop shaft or the revolutions of the road wheels. Greengauges offers a magnetic sensor kit which can be ordered when you purchase your speedometer

What preparations do I need to make prior to installing my instruments? The most important rule is – DISCONNECT THE BATTERY, before attempting any electrical connections.
